Perthshire Wildlife

Woods in Perthshire such as The Hermitage at Dunkeld, Blair Atholl and Killiecrankie are famous for their large trees and the Black Wood of Rannoch is a major remnant of the ancient Caledonian forest with some beautiful "granny" pines.

Perthshire has the River Tay Scotland's longest river and a plethora of stunning lochs, with mountain peaks to match. Ben Lawers overlooking Loch Tay near Killin is nationally important Arctic-Alpine plants.

The Loch of the Lowes by Dunkeld has a visitor centre and hide overlooking the loch. The observation hide provides exellent views of an osprey nest site.

Pitlochry Dam is home to a renowned fish ladder where visitors may experience the thrill of traveling wild salmon. Some 5,000 pass through the ladder each season. Where the Tay becomes an estuary it supports Europe's largest reed beds.

Tawny owls nested using an artificial nest box just beyond the end of the garden.

Vane Farm on Loch Leven is the place to watch wintering geese make their daily flights. Pink-footed geese peak at over 20,000 each November. The RSPB reserve at Vane Farm has an observation room overlooking the loch, from which you may see many species of ducks, redshank, lapwings, whooper swans. There is also a nature trail to see woodland birds such as treecreepers, redpoll, siskins and great spotted woodpeckers.

Perthshire, located at the very heart of Scotland, has an unrivaled range of wildlife habitats to explore and species to see.
